Nashville. Oct 23d /63 Dear Sisters & Brother this afternoon finds us as well as usual. but it is rather Cool & Raing to day it is most to [illegible] for [illegible] 15 in here I recd a letter from you a few days ago and was glad to learn that you are well. Luther recd his things yester day. & I recd a roll of writing paper & some Pockets for My Over Coat. but have Recd no Coat to put them in it is time the Box of books were here but they are not [illegible due to stain on paper] we look for them Every day. we still remain at the Court House in Nashville we have expected to leave once or twice. but the [illegible] look [illegible] for our remaining here some time perhaps all Winter. they are getting the House fixed up so it will be comfortable for the Winter. there is. 3 or 4 Niggars to work at it [illegible] we will have Stoves & there is some fire places besides. So I think we can keep warm. I have seen both of Mr [illegible] Boys. They have been here they are in a Hospital about [illegible] rods from here. They both look quite well. John goes on Crutches, he was Shot through the leg. George is wounded [crossed out] [throug] in the Body, but is doing well they say Sam Laird was killed. He was first shot a little above the ankle. John said he stoped. put his [crossed out word] pants in his Socks. & went on. he had not gone far when he was Shot through the Neck. he then went back & got in the Ambulance. & died while in the Ambulance. I went to Louisville a short time since & Sam Henry, Carlile he was at Mumfordsville KY, he looks tough. & the same old [illegible] he is too I did not see John. Squiers, he was at Camp. & the Cars did not stop long enough for me to go & see him we frequently Come across some old acquaintances Some that I never expected to see in the Army. I was on Patrol yesterday. & did not get to Bed till after 12 oclock. We had considerable business last night James is on duty to day , Philip is getting better, the Boys all look tough & hearty. I guess I not write any more it is so cold write soon as convenient [remainder of line illegible] Excuse this short letter & the [illegible] & I will try & do better another [illegible] something, more inter esting to write, give My respects to all our folks tell them to write & I will write when I can.
