Albert W. Barber writes to his Sister Olivia, Brother Alden, Jeanne, and his friends, reminiscing how three months ago he had left Hillsdale for the South. He notes how frightened the men were when it came time to fight, in comparison the Rebels appeared composed. Barber details that Jude and Ralph do not seem scared, however they have not truly seen a battle. He describes following orders to guard Rebel property, although he states he takes food when offered even though it is against command. Barber concludes by noting that the Ohio boys are rude to the 18th Michigan Regiment, and has heard General Gilmore call the 18th the meanest regiment.
