Camp [illegible] Sep 22 My Dear Brother and Sister as I have nothing to do at presant I will write a little to you I am here in the woods at camp last Thursday we left camp wallace and marched about 8 miles and Stayed on a Rebel camp and marched about 1 mile on Friday on Satuday we marched about [illegible] miles to Crittenden and Stayed on a rebel camp again and Sunday we marched back about 15 miles and today I expect we leave here it is Said that the Rebels camped here night before last it is an old camp ground and I hope we [crossed out] [can] will not Stay here long the Rebels have confisicated and killed So many Beef cattle that it has not a very pleasant Smell around here I was out on picket last night but did not See [illegible] any Rebels as I know of Jude Said he Seen Some last night we have taken a few Rebels and Some Negro Slaves it is Said the Rebels war in Crittenden a bout an hour after we left we follow them & they follow us rather [illegible] but they dare not meet us I guess they are cunning fellows the war will never close unless there is more done than we do although we went out about 30 miles we drove them from place to place but did not Shoot again we have been drawn in a line of battle a number of times expecting a fight when we was on the march I Saw a quite annumber of plantations and lot of negro Slave, little nigers houses Just up all around the house I dont think this is a very good Farming country here althoug h they raise considerable corn and potatoes the crops is ruined we camp in large Corn fields Some times but then Something else I guess the boys are all well James was Corporal of the guard last night he has just come of and is well I have not Seen Philip Since last Thursday Ralph Luther Jude and Michael and all the rest of the boys from around there is here and well we enjoy ourselves as well as could be expected I think I have not been [illegible] to meeting but a couple of times Since we left there yesterday did not Seem like Sunday to me around with a gun all day we know no Sunday here in the army I thought of the Prayer Meeting last night and I hope I am not forgotten there I know I have not fogotten them may God Speed the right that we may meet again So I bid you good bye for a Season from your Solder Brother AWB
