Camp. Near. Stamford Lincoln. Co. [illegible] Apr [crossed out] [Feb] 2.th 1863 I will try & write a little more as there was no chance to Send what I wrote the 29 near Lancaster Since then we have been on the move nearly all the time. we left there at Eleven Oclock & marched 4 miles toward Stanford. Stoped in a field & eat our dinner. which consisted of hard bread & meat & Coffee we expected to croos Dicks River that away. but the Bridge was burnt by the Rebels. & had not been repared So we went back. & went by the way of Crab Orchard. we Started back about 3 oclock, & marched till twelve oclock that night we had a quite a time ^ geting across Dicks River at [illegible] - as there was no Bridge we crossed on Wagons that was put in & board laid on So you can guess how long it took the Brigade to cross Single file while the. 22nd mich. & 112th Ill were crossing the 18th made coffee & ate Supper. & then went & Slep in Empty houses till daylight. we got up & Started on our way. we went out 2 miles. halted in the woods & ate Breakfast. then marched on 8 miles. & ate dinner. through or amongst young mountains & mud. as we was on a dirt road the first dirt Road we have marshed this Spring. the most of the road here is Pike made of Stone. the country is thinly Setled on that 15 miles. mostly woods. the timber is principaly. Oak. Chestnut. Pine. Seeder. blue Ash. & Some maple it Snowed Some in the afternoon we camped that night in the woods we Bilt a Shelter with brush Sticks & leaves. & James. R. Sleep & mySelf. Bunked togather & Slep quite Comfortabile through the night in the mor- ning we found a little Snow on ground. we got our Breakfast. as every one had to be his own cook I recon that is what made the Boys think of home. if anything would a bout 10 Oclock we Started back they Sayed the Rebs was all whiped we come back to Crab Orchard. got there a bout 8 oclock. & Slep in Buildings again we dont know how many of the Rebs was killed but they think about 70. & only 7 of our men we See yesterday about 240 head of cattle that they took back from the Rebels. & Some were drow ned. & 220 prisoners. they were a Shabby looking Set. they had very poor Horses. they dont look much like the [illegible] troops we took 15 Rebel Officers. they think Gen [illegible] is killed [Written upside down on top of page] tell our folks to write Apr 3 we marched back the first day of Apr & Slep in the Buildings that we Slep in two nights before. we got up the morning of the 2 and. I went & milked a cow then we marched for Danville we went out about two miles halted & ate Breakfast. went on to Stanf ord. got here a little afternoon quite tired, we pitched tents & Some of us went last night & got Some Straw. So we Slep very good & here we are this morning. we dont how long we will Stay here. I guess not long we expect to go to Danville to day. the weather is cool & clear we have marched about 150 miles within the past two weeks. but I guess we will have a little rest now for a little while. the Boys feel well. James is tough. Jude & George are well. I have not heard from Ralph or Philip in Sometime. A. Devel. is tough again I expect you have Seen [illegible] before this time. Luther, & .K.Shep are well & martin I must close for this time write often often good bye, Albert, BS
