Simeon wants to make sure the five dollars he sent in the mail reaches his mother. He is sick, but the hospital is at capacity. Simeon says he is in great pain and his feet are constantly damp. He remains outwardly supportive of the Union army, but he is already resentful of the officers' nicer accommodations that the regulars cannot enjoy.
