Camp of 17 Mich Infty Detroit Aug 29th /62 Dear friends be of good cheer for the present finds us all well and in good cheer although we cannot come home we are all ready to start shall be off in a few moments I have got part of my pay have sent home $25.00 twenty five dollars by E J Spaulding you can get it by calling at Ms Havey house I want you to see E.M. Havey and send all my things by him or some of the boys get my old watch at Mr Shaws and send it with the thes things you must see him right away for they will come next week to join us Mother you must pay Mr [Williams?] $2.50 two dollars & fifty cents and Bill [Perry?] .50cts fifty cts and use the rest if you kneed it and if not put it out with Mr Smith or M T Spaulding I dont care which one ---- one day take me both the steamer, may [green?] and sailed for Cleveland Ohio, we had a sick old time last night for the wind was high the 24th Mich Inftry and the boys for the 8th and some of the sharp shooters left Detroit last night the present finds us all seated on the cars at Cleveland and expect to start every moment I don't know as I can finish this this time but will if I can I will write again when we stop and let you know where to write to them you can write to me we drew our rations this morning for four days which was a loaf of bread and a hand full of meat and two onions apiece you must escuse this poor writing for it is so dark in the cars I can hardly see and I have to write it on the [hip?] of my [illegible] on my knee which is a new [illegible] for me, I tell you I miss my pen & ink I have sent my letters by Mr Spaulding which will get to Mr Shaws with Wills. Billy is in the same seat with me all in good cheer I have just bought fifty cakes with a bogus half dollar. I want you to be sure to go and buy Mat Birdsalls best blanket and send with the rest of the things no matter what it costs for I cant get any here but I have got a good overcoat nomore this time mother I hope you are getting well Good Bye B F Marsh well Mother as I have had no chance to mail this until this morning I will write a few more words to let you know where I am this Monday morning Sep 1st we are in Baltimore waiting for a train to go to Washington they boys are all well I feel well except the tooth ache which I have had now two days I think it is the neuralegia this as the first time we have had any time to write since we started from home but it will not be so after we get to our camp the War news are very good here this morning as Stonewall Jackson is captured with a large number of his men nomore as the cars are comeing good bye B.F.
