Benjamin notes that he left Newport News for Fort Monroe, located southeast of his previous camp at the mouth of the James River. He notes that his company and another have to stay down in the hull of the ship, where animals are typically stored. Benjamin mentions in passing that he was in the hospital but he does not say where, when, or for what reason.
