Benjamin tells his sister that the hospital at which he works holds about 200 wounded men. He says there are piles of amputated limbs and at least one person dies daily. Benjamin claims he is using a lightning bug for light, but it is seems that this is a figurative description of his light source. He hints that their mother used to call it a "slut light," which is a term for a simple grease lamp. Benjamin goes on to detail some injuries and other happenings from the Battle of Harper's Ferry. He notes that they have since received reliable news that the Union has captured Richmond.
