Benjamin briefly describes the fighting near Vicksburg, of which he apparently took part. He tells his mother he hopes Sarah will be proud of him once the war is over and he explains why he sent so little money home after his last payday. Benjamin states that they have been living off of half rations for awhile, but they have been taking all the livestock and crops they need from the locals.
