Alvah tells his mother he will send twenty dollars to her. He discusses falling asleep in "the hour of temptation," but it is unclear to what he refers. Alvah is currently serving as a cook, but he does not say where he is stationed. He advises his brother Frank not to enlist in the army, because Frank (like himself) is not suited for soldiering.
