Benjamin updates his brother Freddy on his regiment's recent actions. He says they skirmished with Confederate troops on their way to Jackson, Mississippi, and defeated them easily. Additionally, he notes that their subsequent march in the hot weather killed many men from other regiments, but only one from the Michigan 8th Infantry. Benjamin jokes with Freddy that the sun and heat have tanned his skin and curled his hair so much that he could mistaken for a Black person. Finally, Benjamin mentions that he has lost several teeth since leaving home.
