Benjamin tells Augustus (relation unknown) about seeing vast amounts of dead bodies at the battlefield of South Mountain (also known as Boonesboro Gap). He mentions that during the battle, the Michigan 17th Infantry successfully charged Confederate troops positioned behind a stone fence. He lightens the letter by noting how an old man who lives nearby sells the soldiers milk from his cows for ten cents a quart.
