Spring Hospital near Sharpsburgh M.d Thursday, Oct, 2nd /62 Well Augustus how are you today I am pretty well myself and as I have not recd any letters yet since I left home I am getting tired of doing all the writing and not getting anything for it you must excuse me for not writing to you before for I have bin so busy since I came to the Hospital I don't find any time to write only a few words at a time and that is a [poor?] way for me to write but I have written some letters since I have bin here that I bet I got up [Written on right side of Scan 2] you must excuse me for not stamping this for my stamps are gone [End] once for every line I wrote to wait on the wounded it is a hard place and if it was not for Will I would not stay here for any price we get, 25 cts per day extra for Hospital duties our Regt is about five nite's from here in camp. I have bin away from it since the battle of the 1th whare Will was wounded we have bin in two very heavy battles. the battle of South Mountains & the one on the 17th of Sept Oh you can't have any idea what a sight it is to pass over a battle field and see the dead I saw the rebs at South Mountains whare they lay so thick that you could walk all around on the dead and in other places around a stone fence whare they lay three & four deep whare our boys [Written on left side of Scan 3] write all the news about Eddy and tell me whare to direct so I can write [End] charged on them and gained the ground, our 17th Mich did noble work at the Sunday fight. I have bin up to the Regt once since I left and found E.M. Havey. & the boys all right but did not have a chance to talk with them much for they wer ready to march when I got there well I shall have to finish this some other time, Friday 3 o,clock A.m well Augustus I will try to finish this, this morning I got up at one o,clock and I have just come in from milking my milking [illegible in original] comes in the night the old man that owns this house keeps 12 cows and sells milk to the boys he charges ten cts a quart and so the boys go out in the night and help themselves I only got 30.cts worth enough for a good breakfast well it is most time to go to wash and I must close tell Mr Shaw that will is doing first rate he is gaining fast Yours truly Good Bye you must write all the news B.F.
