Saturday July 23rd 1864 My dear Grandson Your kind and affectionate letter of July 5th was recd in due time for which accept my sincere and heartfelt thanks You cannot think how much it cheers us to know of your welfare and we do really hope that you may live to return a blessing to your waiting friends at home. Your dear letters are to us really a blessing and I know that your presence must be a very great conso- -lation to your mother Since writing you before we have had several nice showers but it is quite dry again now We are now having any quantity of berry green [pears?] [etc.?] How I wish you could drop in and take tea with us. some night or every night we would have a good visit. Will you please inform us what Lincoln pies are as we are ignorant in regard to that kind of food. Do you get fresh berrys or cherries?
