[Written upside down on top of Scan 1] I have sent my day Book [End] 9th Corps, Hospital. 3rd Div Aug 21st /64 Dear Mother I have been look- ing a long time for a letter from Home or some one but none has come as yet. I expect thare is Mail at the Regt for me. but they are some 8 miles from here they moved to the left a few days ago. and had a fight Friday in Which we lost Our Major H. Belcher. and some 25 or 30 men Wounded and Missing. the Major was killed. shot three times before he fell. I have not learned the particulars from the Regt yet I have seen two of my Company Wounded B.F. Sawyer is Wounded in right Breast severe [WL.?] Perkins. left arm Amputated if you see any of Sawyers folks tell them Burton is Wounded rather serious but I think with good care he will get well, the Ball went in under the right shoulder Blade and came out at the right Breast I have been to see him this morning he is feeling quite smart this A.M. I shall try to go to City Point with him if I keep able to work. I am so as to be around all the time and have been making Pipes from Clay taken from the mine whare our men Blew up the fort $6.00 I have made some Six Dollars worth. that I have the money for and have one that will sell $2.00 for two dollars ^ it is for Major Lyons I am going to make one to send Home if I can for a keep sake Tell Mrs. Terry that Aut was not in the fight he is not well. I think he is [to?] City Point but do not know I saw him some five or six days ago. and he was quite unwell then. We have had a very wet time here now for the past week it has rained nearly every day. Today it is Cloudy and Cool thare is hard fighting on our left this A.M. as I am writing you this letter. I think from the roar of Artillery and from the sound I think they are throwing Grape & Canister, which is only used in Close action. Our men have taken the Weldon R.R. and the Rebs are trying to take it back again I suppose. as it is their only hopes of saving Petersb Well Mother you need not worry about me for I intend to look out for No 1 and keep Cool until the 23rd of Next month and see what they intend to do with us. and ed If Uncle Sam does as he promis^ to in Aug 1862. all will be right and if not, I fear the Sub. BFM will be one Poor Soldier for the next eleven months. but I think all will come out right in time Our Col has gone Home on a furlough and one of our Captains they are going to see about it Major Belcher was in Command of the Regt when he was killed. you remember I told you he was Wounded at Grace Church, and [had?] just returned to the Regt for duty a short time ago.
