Company G. 8th Mich Veteran Vol Infty Near Petersburgh Virginnia Tuesday June 21st 1864 Dear Sister Sarah Once more I am permitted to pen you a few [lines?] for which I am very thankfull. I recd Mothers letter of June 14th last evening and was very glad to hear from home again. I also recd a Paper from East Otto N.Y. stating that they (Mr Spauldings folks) had recd a line from DeWitt. he is a prisoner in Dansville, Va he said he would write again soon and tell them whare to direct a letter to him. As for my health, it is very good considering the hard times I have seen I have been unwell for sometime and unable for duty but Our Doctors don't know enough to pound sand I cannot get any cure, so I took a gun and went to doing duty and last Friday the 17th as the Regt was advancing and preparing for a charge I I was carried off the field being sun struck I lay from eleven until half past four before I came to. since then I have suffered with a heavy pain in my heart and dizziness but I think if I keep out of the hot sum I will get over it. and I shall not go on duty again until I think I am able to stand it if the Doctor here sends me to duty I shall go to our Div Surgeon (Dr. Fox) and report to him. he will take care of me I know I have just sent a letter stating the Death of my Friend George Carnes, but Will mention it in this. Thare was something strange about his death he told me some time ago if he ever went into another fight he should be killed. but I thought nothing of it for I d hear the remark so often but I told him I guesse^ not and told him not to alow himself to think so he said he knew it was rong to think so but he would not keep it out of his mind. and he told me if he did get killed he wanted me to settle up all his Company matters he said he was oweing the Boys a great deal and he wanted every one to have their Pay. as it was all borrowed money. he was oweing some sixty-five Dollars in the Regt. George was a good Boy in the Company always ready to do his duty he was one that helped every one off the fields only the day before he was killed. Poor Boy he is done with all [his?] troubles which was many for a Boy of his age the conduct of his Wife almost made him crazy but he is better off now than many. for his troubles are past his Soldiering is done and he is at rest as for the fighting here it has been mostly on our right and left for two days [past?] we are getting the Johnies in rather close quarters around Petersburg we are close enough to shell or Burn the City if we chose. and are now building strong rifle Pitts I think thare will be no more charging here in our front on our side. we will only hold our lines and let the Johnie do as they like if we only cut the Rail Roads running into North Carolina we are all sound and I think we can [those?] has a large force came around that way now. and we will show them whose tater patch they are [eating?] in this summer. [illegible word] recd your [illegible] letter of June 10th a few nights ago so I will answer yours and Mothers all in one [illegible] stamp and other things [illegible] service with me. you said you had [illegible] messes of strawberries off your vines I should think you might send me out a [illegible] dish of strawberries and cream with a piece of Cake( will you if I will send you a little curly headed: thick liped bug eyed Nigger, [can?] the sacred Sail of Old [Virginia?] to [two words illegible] you and fetch it to me! Yes well I guess I.d rather go without the strawberries than to disgrace Fentonville with any of [Virginia's?] Niggers! but I am intruding on Mothers share of this sheet so I must close Give my respects to all enquiring Friends! and write soon{ from Your Affectionate Brother. Frank My Dear Mother how thankfull I was to recieve a letter from you last evening and hear you are well, I have long been looking for one from you!! Wensday June 22nd well mother. last night after I commenced this letter I went up to my Company I have been [stopping?] back with the Cooks since I was Sunstruck but thought I would go to my Co last night found theme in the front line of [Pitts?]. and our Company with two others got Orders to move out into an open field to support a Battery so I came back with the Cooks again because I dare not be in the hot sun it is very warm here at noon and the Sun has great affect upon me since I was struck last Friday. as for my health Mother it is very good with the exception of my head I have a bad Pain in the right side of my head and neck. I think I shall go down to the Div Hospital tonight after Sundown to see Dr. Fox for Dr. Willet shant know enough to be a deacent Horse or Hog doctor he has told me to report to my Company once but I dont care. when I get able I will go and not before for him or any other fool! if I can see Dr. Fax I know he will tell me to keep still and out of the sun, until I get better. I recd a letter from Augustus this A.M. he seems to be doing well. I will send it to you. he writes good I think Now Mother I guess you begin to want some money by this time and I do wish I could get my pay so as to send you some but I suppose we will not get any pay until this Campaign is over which I hope will be soon for I am getting tired of the roar of Artillery and musketry which we have scarcely ben rid of for nearly two months or since the fifth of May. only three days we have passed with the sound of guns and the Battle field in some direction. we are now close to Petersburg so we can give them full Rations of shot and shell. we have not thrown any in town yet I suppose they will give them time to get the People out of the way before we shell the place. Old Bob Lee said he was going to have this ground all back by Monday night last but he seemed to fail on his contract and if he tries to take it I think he will get a jab he will be glad to let out we are ready for him now with good Pitts. [illegible] George C. was killed as we wer charging on their works. the Boys from Fenton are poorly represented in the Regt now. I believe that Clark Dibble [Ike?] Kidney and myself is the only ones that came out with me. I understand Billey Cale is at Home is that so he was left back sick. Now Mother dont worry about me I am getting along very well if I dont get Sunstruck again and shall guard against that. You must write often from Your Affectionate Son Frank
