Benjamin writes that he has been excused from duty because he feels ill whenever he is exposed to the sun. He doubts he will be able to get a furlough but is contented by the large amount of letters he recently received. Benjamin says he is currently serving in the pits at the Siege of Petersburg but may go to the hospital soon.
