Greenbush Clinton Co March 22 65 My Dear W with pleasure on March 3rd I was truley thankful to hear that you had got back with out any accident but sorry that you had to travel so far on foot and that your Regiment had gone and left you but perhaps you was not in the fight that your Regiment was in. I do hope you may be spared to come home to us again do not think that I now intend to neglect you by not writing to you oftener since your return for I have not intended [illegible] to do so but I have to keep buisy and perhaps I do not inprove the time the time to write when I might we have done a little at sugaring we shall run thirty about 30 pounds when we get it sugar ed off and it is beautiful and white the weather has been very warm for three days but yesterday we had a storm and last night the wind changed into the north and to day we have winter again. Mary has not come home yet I thought she would want to come home in sugaring time but there does not seem to be any thing very tempting about it home is of secondary importance I had a letter from your Cousin Mary Green and she said [crossed out] [she] when she heard victory of any of Sheridans great ^ battles she felt proud that she had a Cousin with him she said I must give her love to you every time I wrote to you so you must accept her love from me She is a dear good cousin Cousin Libby is a cripple with a sprained wrist and is likely to always be so she said she hoped she might see you after the war was over she she says ^ must have one of your cards and she would make all alowance for the poorness of it I suppose they are finished but we have not got theirs yet Mary got one of them and I think it was a better one than the one that you had Carrie says she must have one of them and I suppose she will get one Mr Rolfe thinks he has sold out every thing but beds and beding and dishes and children and old woman she is determined to stick to him and he is going to leave this part of the country I wish you could be here to our sugarings but I will save you some very choice the news is very encouraging from the army now Grant says cannot see any thing why [illegible] he was from closing if the head men were out of the way he has offered a reward of a thousand dollars for the head of Jeff Davis I hope some one will get it but I would like to have him tortured to death as he has served our soldiers but I believe there is a just God and he will meet his end in some way write as often as you can and I will try to do better [In?] much love I remain as ever your loving and affectionate Mother N L Mattoon G W Mattoon
