Gershom writes to his sister to tell her that his unit, the First Michigan Lancers, were ordered to disband. To prevent desertion and keep the soldiers around for reassignment, their commanders prohibited any soldier from getting drunk or crossing the lines without a pass. The punishment for committing these offenses was to be imprisoned in the guard house. Gershom strongly believes that his regiment will refuse reassignment until they are properly mustered out, paid, and put under new command since they do not like the fact that a Captain and Sergeant are Canadian.
