Gershom describes the mobilization process as his regiment, the Sixth Michigan Cavalry, prepares to enter the war. He notes that part of his responsibilities involve taking care of the horses. Gershom goes on to describe a horse falling during a training exercise and a quirky horse that lays down in the river every time its rider brings it into the water.
