Gershom writes that he caught a bad cold due to the harsh weather. He mentions witnessing hundreds of wounded soldiers being brought to Washington, D.C., during the Battle of Fredericksburg. Gershom goes on to discuss some kind of miscommunication, presumably with his sister, but the details are unclear. He closes by stating that his regiment has been brigaded with "the fifth," probably in reference to the first incarnation of the Michigan Brigade, made up of the Fifth, Sixth, and Seventh Michigan Cavalry Regiments.
