O.G. Dunckel Papers (c.00024)

This collections consists primarily of Civil War letters from Oshea G. Dunckel to his family in Michigan. Dunckel enlisted as a private at age 43 in the 14th Michigan Infantry on February 18,1864 and served with his son-in-law, Lewis Price. Their regiment was stationed in Tennessee and Georgia, later joining Sherman's "March To The Sea" through Georgia and the Carolinas. Also included are three letters from other members of the Price family serving with Dunkel. He survived the war.

The collection also contains two documents. The first is a contract (1853) between Dunckel and a group of Chippewa Indians living on the Pine River in Michigan, in which Dunckel agrees to plow the Chippewas' land. The second document (1853) authorizes the Indian Agent to pay Dunckel out of their government funds. Both documents were signed by members of the tribe.

Dunckel's first name had alternate spellings: O'Shea, Osea and just the initial O. His last name sometime was spelled with an ending 'e'.
