Elk River Tenn July 17th 1863 Dear Friend O.G. D. I see yours last night and was glad to hear from you I am well and I hope this may find you the same and your family also I have had a hard march I cant tel you mutch about the march but I will tel you how and where I spent my fourth it was in and on the sholes of Elk river we had hard work on the third and did not get to lay down until ten oclock and we was all wet at that for we had forded the river twice that day the water was up to our arms and very cold and to cap out it rained all day and we had to make road all day for the ammunition to pass so you can judge that we was some faced out and in the morning of the fourth at three oclock we was aroused and hurried to pack our blanket and two eat our breakfast which was a plate of cold boiled beans and no bread ( we was out of rations and had to pick up sutch as we could find) and in then we fell^ marched to the river and and forded it at sun rise cold as ever then we commenced our days work on the sholes which was a swamp we built corderroy about three miles at noon my diner was a small peace of corn bread made of corn meal and water and a small piece of fresh beef about enough for an old cat and that was in a mud hole for high ground was sunk there and we eat between showers for it rained most all day at night we had waddled through the mud and camped on high ground after we camped the baterries fired the national salute of 35 guns and thus we laid down and was soon a sleep you can bet we was in the march 15 teen days and the day I have just described was a bout like the rest but we all stood it well for we was often old Brad and pepered him in the rear once and a while maken him [nip?] up leaving his [commissaries?] behind him we are now at the R.R. bridge that goes over the river it will be done about a sunday night we have built 4 wagon bridges a crost the river within 2 miles so we shant half to ford the river any more you are excused for not writing sooner but I was disapointed in not rec any letter from that I will not write any to hur this time but I will send hur my face and see if that dont fetch a letter from hur I have not hurd from any eather of the boys in some time the last I hurd from the [Lute?] he was in Louisiana I hope he is home by this time the rig I think is at Franklin but I have not hurd from Chas so I am not cirtain I have not seen Pirkins I would like to see him I am well suited the way you let on my place for I think that garret will take care of my ordered I would like to have the ten are acres attached to my twenty and would give all it was worth when I get home but I dont want to buy it now while I am here for I can do well with my money what little I have I suppose you had a good time the fourth I hope you all enjoyed your selves as well as I did I dint think I ever enjoyed my self as well before in all my life for I never but I must bring my letter to a close this time write soon I am as ever your friend Direct to George H Price Co.
