Lucy apparently asked Gooding about his relations with other women, so Gooding responds by saying he has seen many but none that surpassed her. Gooding gives hints that they had deeply discussed the hardships their relationship would face during the war and made plans to end it should some unforeseen circumstances arise. In spite of this, Gooding professes his deep commitment to her.
