River & 30 miles from Chattanooga once more I take my pen to write you a few lines in answer to yours of the 17th which I received last night we have come over the moutains & are in East Tenn.. now we have had a number of skirmishes with the rebles laitly we have mad them get out of the way not without some loss our regiment lost ten men at Sparta it is a place on the mountains a little larger than Mooreville two out of our company ware wounded thare one of them was shot from his horse the other was dismounted and stood but a few feet from me he was shot through the thigh he is like to get well the other one was shot in the neck the ball going down back of his lung he is able to walk round and is like to get well it looks hard to see men shot down in this way yet it dont give one such bad feelings as you would think it would the rebles have a large force on the other side of the river wating for us to cross I suppose when old Rosy.. get ready we shall go into them we have been wating here a numbe of days for rations the rations come last night and I guess we shall move before long it dont make much differance to me how quck we are having the nicest kind of weather for soldiering not much rain in the last four weeks we dont pitch our tent nights three or four rails make a bed good enough for any soldier we live well part of the time have been short of rations lately and have to forge a goodeal it dont hurt our feelings much to tak from the Rebles thare is a good many Union men in this part they had a great time the other day after we come here men women & childern come together & raised a pole with the sars & Stripes they had some speaches made by there own cittizen & our officers some of them spoke they had a first rate time our band made music for them thare was some good looking Girls they acted green [I?] guess neve heard much muscic before if you new what a mean place I have got to write you would not blame me for stoping the wind blows and the dirt gets all over the paper fellow what makes you provoke a ^ by asking him to come to a picnic for you no I dont want to be thare I have neglected writing for the mail has been nether way from this place the last letter I wrote befo this was at McMinnville & 16th I will write oftener if I have a chance the boys from our way are all well and fell first rate dont use my name in any way when you comence a letter to me sometimes thare is a good many looking on when we receive letters Othniel
