Oct 11th /63 Lucy once more I take my pen to write you a few lines not in answer to anything I have received the last letter from you was Sept. 26th I answerd t it the Same day thare is a deta^c- -hment left here from our Brigade to wate for horses we stoped here the ^ 7th expect to go to Nashville tomorrow how long we shall have to wate thare cant tell thare is no horses for us & we have to wate untill they can be bought we aint in no great danger of getting hurt while hear. I tell you it is dul busyness this having nothing to do and if anything will make me think of home this will talk about getting used to war so that one dont want to go home I dont believe anything in it it's all nonsence. likenough you would like to no what brought us way back up here after our army was drive back to Chattanooga the Tenn.. River was our front and the cavalry had to watch it to keep the Reble cavalry from crossing and getting in our rear our Brigade was sent up to Washington about 40 miles above Chattanooga on the River to watch a ford thare thare is but a few places whare they can cross the scecond night after we got thare a cittizan come in to camp to tell us the Rebles ware crossing at a ford nere his house we ware orderd out of course and it proved true for they had crossed with about ten thousand we only had about three with us and of course we had to be getting out of the way. we fell back towards Chattang and wated for reinforcements which come that night the next morning we started after them we have had a good many fights withe their rear guard on the seventh our forces captured three hundred prisoners & four peices of artilry they come in here the same night a hard looking mess I tell you the rebles burnt one of our wagon trains on the 8th only 400 of them loaded withe clothes and rations but that dont amount to much for Uncl Sam.. is able to get more we have been rather short of rations some of the time over long back three days ration having to last us seven potatoe patches and all eatables suffer at such times it has been so that we could get plenty of fruit it is most used up now I left Frank & Gust.. in camp nere Chattanooga the 2d and have not heard from them since nether of them ware well enough to come but ware well enough to be around Rosecrans is makeing another forward movement has got his front line out as far as it ws before the last Battle thare is large reenforcements being sent here from the army of the Potomac Jo Hooker has gone to Chattanooga with two crps of Intfanty artilry & Cavalry thare is no end to somebody is a going to get whiped down that way I guess it will be the Rebs.. time will tell the Boys from the Potomac are putting on a goodeal style & one would think they had done all the fitting to here them talk I guess they will get over it.
