[Written kitty-corner on top of Scan 1] Please to write a little longer litters Head Quarters Co "A" Camp Boone Feb 8th 1864 Lucy I received your letter of 27th last night it found me all right a lazing away time we are camped four miles from Chattanooga just over the Tennessee line within two miles of Lookout Mountain betwen that and Mission Ridge and close by a part of the Battle field of Chickmanga Frank has gone out thare to day when the rebles ware drive back from Mission Ridge ^ our men found lots of our dead lying on the old Battle Field killed more than two months before and they are some unburied yet but dead men dont amount to much down here you would think so if you could hear the remarks that I have heard when passing by some of their dead the last scout we ware out on we killed a number some of Company "A" done it to for we had the advance a reble corporal was shot from his horse and fell side the road he was lying on his face when our Boys come up one of them dismounted and turned him over (he said he wanted to see if he was not playing possum) another seeing his strip on his arm said thare would be a chance for promotion etc etc it dont give me the same fellings it did once to see dead stile I do not like to see them for thare is hardly any one whether Fedral or Reble but what leves some one to think of them now you need not have unpleasant dreams over what I have writen perhaps it would of been just as well if I had kept it to myself (in next to your last letter you said look well to your enemies I dont think I have any very bad ones. for your sake let me know what you mean so I can be on my guard I am afraid that all of your friends are not quite true hope I am mistaken if thare is anything wrong let me know it and I will try and make it right guess if I ware at home I could make it all right I'd try you may bet on that) I see by the way you write that you are in hopes the war is agoing closed soon well I hope it will I dont think thare is much prospect though but hope for the best no telling what the year will bring forth Henry Hack is married well good luck. to him its (better [buissnes?] than soldiering I guess) but never mind the war wont last always or at least I hope it wont talk about nice weather you will have to come down to Georga to see nice winter weather sunshiny and warm every day I am writing in my tent without any fire and it is comfartable Jim Delaforce is at work the next tent to mine a puting up a Chimbly for the nights are cool and one needs a fire we have no commissioned officers with us and Company "A" is under my Administration I make things run [levle?] we have lots of Mich boys here the 10 & 11.. 21 & 22d Int are nere here only a part of our regiment are in camp now - a part being up most to Knoxville on courier duty Remember me to all your folks tell Hatt I am all right and ask her how she is Yours Truly Othniel
