Gooding has mixed feelings about his Company's new recruits, who he pities, but only to a limited degree, since he believes they held out from voluntary service as long as possible. He also notes things such as the frequency with which they skirmish with Confederate troops, Frank's nosiness, and the fact that he has been denied a furlough.
