Camp near [Noonday?] Creek Ga June 26th 1864 Dear Lucy after so long time I will write you a few lines I have had no chance for writing lately last night the mail come in fetched me two letters one from you & one from Helen your was maild the 15th & I was glad to get it it is the ninth letter I have received from you since I left home & this is the seventh I have writen we had a fight had a fight fight on the 20th we ^ have had a ^ good many since we started out on this campaign but this was a little the toughefst time yet our regiment was orderd to charge what was supposed to be one regi- -ment of cavalry but thare proved to be a half a dozzen regiments they halted us rather. short I cant tell you all the paticulars of the fight for I have no time they charged us first withe revolver comeing down out of the woods in solid column we sent them flying with our spencers but not without loss for they killed six horses out of 20 killed two of our men & wounded two the first fire from our company they then chargad with saber. four or five of them only [come?] through our line and they ware cut down in less than no time Asa. W. Mosher one of the Boys that was killed he lived in Augusta he was a good soldier we had no braver the other Boy that was killed lived in Detroit his name was Smidt I was standing close to him when he fell the ball passed through his head & he never knew what hurt him Frank was slightly wounded & a recruit severly wounded through the right lung this was all the loss from our company the whole loss of the regiment was 41 prisoners 10 killed 23 wounded & 8 wounded this out of less than 2100 two hundred engaged. we lost over forty horses after fighting an hour & over we ware compeld to fall back fetching of only a part of our killed and wounded we went out the next morning and got the [reast?]. for the Rebs.. left the field about as low as we did it was the hottest fire I have ever been in some of the time we war withing thirty feet of each other if they [begin?] get me in many more such places you will want to look for some other corespondent you might do well to look out for another for all I tell you they shoot close thare is continual fighting along our line we are within 2 mile of Marietti let Brooks know who of our company are killed & wounded tell him his friend Trip was wounded in the knee the weath is very warm the mail is closing and I have no more time to write Othniel we are orderd to be ready to move out at 12 oclock if you cant read this send it back
