Gooding has been in the hospital for over a month now, and he remains in Columbia, TN. There was a rumor that Confederate General Joseph Wheeler's troops were going to raid the town and capture the hospital patients. Wheeler never came, but Gooding said he was not worried anyhow because he figured hospitalized soldiers would be treated with leniency.
