Gooding and Frank are now sharing a tent in a campsite near Gravelly Springs, Alabama. They are forced to rely mostly on corn for food and Gooding is pessimistic about the rumors of peace that have been circulating. He believes Union political leaders should be less involved in matters concerning African Americans, even though some may think he was a Copperhead.
