Gooding is preparing for another scouting mission and hopes to supplement their diet by confiscating food from the locals. It seems to him that the Confederates were always on the run, although he realizes the tables could be turned at any moment in a long, drawn out conflict such as this. Also, Gooding is quite happy that winter is giving way to spring.
