Gooding puts down the weather in Michigan compared to his location near Murfreesboro, TN. He discusses how soldiers around him have mixed feelings about Union General Joseph Hooker's performance at the Battle of Chancellorsville (presumably). Gooding describes his morale as generally positive thanks to the band receiving new silver instruments, the improving health of the sick, and the rose petals he received in a letter from Hatty (relation unknown).
