Harry, Lottie's friend from college who also boarded with the McEldowneys, writes from the outskirts of Washington, D.C., where his regiment awaits marching orders. Scandrett was a corporal in Company E of the 70th New York Infantry, which was attached to the Excelsior Brigade. He says that he is already accustomed to the sound of cannon fire and he wishes to hear updates on college friends.
