Union Soldiers and Sailors of Michigan:

your loyal friends for the purpose of joining you yal enemies, we, a portion of the Mich-
igan boys in blue, respectfully request you to. meé® us “in Detroit, at Firemen’s Hall, on
Thursday evening , August 30, 1866, for the purpose of giving expression: to our sentiments
upon the great issues of the day, ‘and of organizing the - ‘Society of the “Michigan Boys in
Blue.”

We call upon all to join us who believe in justice to our friends before magnanimity to
our foes—all who would encourage the Union men of the South before unrepentent’ rebels.
We believe that it will be time enough to forgive traitors who fought against the old flag,
when they forgive patriots who fought for it. It will be time enough to embrace rebels as
brethren when ‘they cease the mobbing of qoyal citizens. and. the lynching | of Union soldiers
now going on. It will be time enough to proclaim peace when a Union Soldier can visit
ie the graves of his comradess and the field of his victories, wearing the Union blue, and_car-
‘ae rying the old flag, secure from public violence and private assassination, without a padlock
on his lips, or a cover over his loyal heart.

We protest against rebels whom we have whipped in the field being constituted, by im-
mediate restoration. to political power, our superiors at the ballot box. In reconstructing the
Union we demand that a South Carolina rebel soldier’s vote shall not count twice as much
as the vote of a Union Michigan soldier. We demand also that traitors who deserted the
army, or violated official oaths, to join the rebellion, shall be prohibited from being elected

_ President or Governor to rule over loyal men, or Legislators o1 Congressmen, to make laws to
govern Union soldiers. -

And we invite all who are still true to the old flag, the old cause, and to old friends,

eto rally with us once more in the ranks of Right, Justice and- true Union, shouting the same
