This issue of the Fredericksburg, Virginia, newspaper the Christian Banner contains reports on the progress of the war from both Union and Confederate perspectives, articles seeking to demonstrate the folly of secession, and reports/editorials on African Americans escaping slavery in the early stages of the war. A dedicated Unionist, the newspaper's publisher, James W. Hunnicut, was pressured to cease publication of the Christian Banner at the onset of the war, but resumed publishing on May 9, 1862, shortly after Union forces gained control over Fredericksburg [Source: Matthew S. Gottlieb & the Dictionary of Virginia Biography, "James W. Hunnicutt (1814-1880)," Encyclopedia Virginia (Charlottesville: Virginia Foundation for the Humanities, 2015).] Note: The transcriptions only include the headlines from the newspaper. For each page, headlines are arranged by column and proceed from left to right. Also, the paper is dated June 11, 1862, but at the top of page 2, the editor acknowledges that this is a misprint and the correct date of the paper is Saturday, June 14, 1862.
