     After looking in vain
for a letter from you by

mails I thought I would
drop a line to you to let
you know that I was still 
kicking and trying to 
live way down here
in the [crossed out word] Creole State
of Sesession.. I have
been very sick with
the Swamp Fever, but 
now am quite well again
