Richard makes note of the many rain and snow storms they experienced in the past three weeks. He reassures Eliza that he attends church often and has given his name to the local Methodist Episcopal Church. Richard then states that he misses his wife and friends, but especially his daughter, and he hopes to return to Michigan by "the fourth" (presumably of July). Eliza's brother Josiah contributes the last page of the letter, noting that he is out of the hospital and his health is improving. He also promises to write more letters to his mother and he thanks her for giving him parenting advice when he was a new father. Josiah closes by mentioning that their regiment's colonel will be presented with a sword and sash at an upcoming ceremony.
