Richard notes that his regiment was recently involved in a battle, which was likely the Battle of Baton Rouge. Next, they expect to go to New Orleans to engage Confederate troops once more. Richard tells a detailed story about Confederate soldiers returning a Union prisoner when Richard was on picket duty. The soldier was extremely sick and he foamed at the mouth when they gave him water. Richard suspected he was poisoned and the soldier died soon thereafter. Richard then describes the Battle of Baton Rouge, mentioning the death of an apparent family friend, Stephen Griffin, and the near death of Levi Sibley.
