Simeon is still recovering from his illness, but may be transferred to Elk River to cook for men constructing fortifications. He reassures Cindonia that he has not engaged in drinking alcohol, nor has he taken another wife. Simeon also warns her to be careful of the shady business practices of people back home who offer their help in tending the farm.
