#44 July 10th 1864 Stevenson, Ala. Dear wife I received your letter of June 30th yester- day morning and was glad to hear that you was well and had a shower you say the grass is all burned up; will you raise enough fodder for the Horses and sheep and one cow if you do it is all I Expect for that is as much as Gratiot can do. You had not better build to much on my coming home this fall for it is possible that we shall be kept after the old regiments time is out there is quite a difference of opinion about it here you had better get Lyman Matthews to get you a copy of the vote that was taken in the town about of the bounty I think you must have played up Luce Musser Some since I went away if you have not been dressed up but twice and got an awfull hugging then . if you will tell me when you was dressed up perhaps I could guess better who hugged you I think it must be some one that is most always their or he would not been there to hugged you both times you got dressed up I cant think who it is unless it is Jim Knapp I had heard that Edd Wardwell was married well the girl must have a quere taste for music or for anything else I think you gave that boy of burgesses a very Patriotic name – tell Bassett that is the very coat I drew in Detroit I dont want you to eat it up for I want you to wear it this winter if I dont come home if I had the money I would buy some old cothes and some more blankets and send them home . I think this war will play out this fall then we shall all come home I am well the boys are most of them well we had a splendid Shower here to day there is not much news here the boys are most all out picking Black berries there is world's of them here now and they are ripe and splendid now whortleberries are quite plenty I can get all the berries I want easier than to pick them I make pies for the boys to the halves and can get more than I can eat in that way I got a letter from Gould Matthews last Friday he is well and in fine spirits he says he is going to be promoted to a full corporal on June 30th his letter was dated June 27th I shall write an answer to him Soon he wants to know where Jim Minard is and where to direct a letter to him . Well I must July 10th stop writing and say good bye I should like to see you very much but will wait patiently and if the lord is willing we will meet again kiss the children for me from your ever loving husband Simeon A Howe
