47 Stevenson Ala July 31st 1864 Dear wife it is now three weeks tomorrow since I got a letter from you or heard a word from you if you are not able to write have Electa mention it with her letters to John. Ed Basseett got a letter day before yesterday not a word about you in it John has not had had a letter for two weeks. if you have forgotten me just say so in your next. and I will do as the Irishman did send it back without opening it. Well it is very lonesome not to hear a word from home I could almost run away to find out what had become of you are you all well and two busy to write or have you wrote and the letters have miscarried I feel very uneasy. I think I shall come home in October and then I shall pay you up for this seeming neglect I am well as ever we are at Stevenson yet and are like to be for a month or more yet there is a good deal of work to do here yet. the war news from the front is very good Sherman is pushing the rebels hard at Alanty they say Gen Grant has mined Petersburgh and will blow it up in a short time well I wish he would dig a mine under the whole Southern Confed- eracy and blow it all to flinders. Please to write as soon as possible is the children well do they grow any and do they learn fast kiss them for me would they like to see their pa tell them pa would like to see them have you got a copy of that vote in town for township bounty yet if you have send me a copy of it in your next letter for if there is any chance to get it I am in for it. well I must go and get dinner so I must bring this short letter to a close when I get a letter from you I will try and write a longer letter than this one I dont think of much more to write only we had boiled corn for supper last night we live on the top shelf here this summer good bye for this time from your husband Simeon A Howe
