September 11th 1864 Dear wife I expect you are half crazy for not hearing from me Sooner I suppose you have heard all about the raid of the rebel General Wheeler before this time well he cut the communication between here and Nashville # eleven days ago and there has been no mail gone through untill this morning there was a train come from Nashville the mail will go out from here this afternoon So you see I have improved the first opportunity to write I have not got a letter from you since 3 days before the raid but expect one or two soon I am out of stamps and am waiting for those from home wheeler did not do hardly any damage only tore up a few miles of railroad track he did not capture a single train of cars but he has lost about 2,000 of his men as the expence of his raid I am as well as usual the Comp is in very good health at the present the hottest of the weather is past we have not got our pay yet there is new recruits comeing for this regiment So good bye to being mustered out this fall for we shall all have to stay our time out unless the war is over there is not much news to write we are still at work on the fortifications here but we are nearly through with them In dont know where we will go next the talk is we will go back to Tullahoma. Sherman has captured Atlanta and drove hoods army 30 miles the other side of the place bully for Sherman I don't think of much more to write Arden must be good and help ma all he can and when pa comes home he will let him ride a good lot on the horses and the colt. where is will I dont hear from him at all does Hank's folks expect Bert home this fall I should like to come home and see how you look before I forgot but there is no use in talking I am cooking yet but am (b) getting most tired of it bade must have his toad fixed up with peper and salt when I get home I think I see how the little fellow looks when he tries to plague the rest of you well it is most mail time and I must bring this to a close by saying good bye.
