Simeon notes that it is very difficult to make decent food from the ingredients he is given. He mentions that he has not seen any dead bodies yet and he comments on the South's lack of industry. Simeon also observes that African Americans make exceptional soldiers, even stating that he believes "as to Inteligence they are equal or superior to the white..."
