#76 Indianapolis, Soldiers Home March 5th, 1865. Dear Wife we are on our way at last to go to Savannah Ga to Join our Regiment we Started from Murfreesboro March 2d it was quite warm there people had begun to plough up and make garden and here in Indiana there is snow on the gound and the ground is froze some I think it must be very cold where you are but you are very fond of Cold weather. if it was not for your love of a cold country I never should live there any more. I should Sell out and move South to a warmer climate. I am as well as ever and enjoy myself as well as anybody only I should like to see my family very much. we expect to start from here at one Oclock this afternoon for Pittsburgh in pennsylvania and from there to New York City and then take a boat for Savannah I think we will have a very pleasant trip it is rather cold to be comfortable but I guess we can stand it well enough I have given up coming home this spring I hope God will watch over you in my absence dont worry yourself to death about me but put your trust in God, ask him to watch over me and ask in faith and it will all go well with me. God has protected me so far in answer to your prayers and I believe he will continue to keep his arms over me and he has protected my wife and little ones and saved them for me while death has been all around them and almost in their very doors this has been in answer to my [prays?] and I still have faith to believe that I shall be permitted to enjoy the society of my friends after the war is over and the country is at peace again you must excuse the hastiness of this short letter for there is about five hundred men in this room and not much of a chance to write . William says you are getting Grey now I know what makes you get grey it is fretting So much you must Stop it and put more con- fidence in your prayers. I must bring my letter to a close and bid you good bye for a short time and may God bless my darlings is my prayer I received your letter stating that Samantha was dead. O how sorry I am I can not be there to comfort you in your Sorrow but so it is and so it must remain. Mar. 5, 1865.
