#76 77 Battery Barracks N.Y. City March 9th 1865 Dear wife I have got so far in my journey to Savannah. I dont expect to get any letters from home untill I get to the Regt we got here last night about 8 oclock we have had a very pleasant time it is raining some to-day we expect to stay here 4 or 5 days before we can get transportation I have had one ride on Salt water if we have good luck 4 we shall not be on the water only four days I think we Shall have a pleasant trip time we have got along so far and have not had any accident happen God has followed us with his blessing so far and I his blessings will go with us to our journey's end I am well as usual but some tired for we have road on the cars 3 days and 3 nights without stopping to get out our grub we went to the Soldiers home once a day all the way we got the best of fare at pittsburgh Penn I think the people of Pennsylvania are the most patriotic of any state I have come through they give the soldier a hearty welcome it is not that cold stiff salute that come from others on the road as if they were forced to [illegible in original] welcome us anyhow but free and cordial as if it comes from the heart. I will give you a synposis of the route we Come.. perhaps it will be pleasant for the children to trace out the railroad line that I came over. I started from Murfreesboro March 2d and came to Nashville and stayed all night in the Zolicofer Barracks in the morning took the cars for Louisville Ky got there in the evening at 8Oclock stayed till noon the next day and took the ferry across the Ohio River took the cars right away for Indianapolis got there the next morning about 8 Oclock and went to the Soldiers home and got our breakfast and started for Pittsburgh in the afternoon we went through Crestline to Wooster and from thense to Pittsburgh got there in the Evening 30 hours after leaving Indianapolis went to the Soldiers home and got a good supper and took the cars for Harrisburg and Philadelphia was twenty-four hours from Pittsburgh to Harrisburg and 12 hours from harrisburg to Philadelphia and 12 hours from philadelphia to New York we have come a distance of about 1400 miles by Rail all but about 35 miles of it in Six days and a little over as we did not start from Murfreesboro untill nearly night of the 2d of March so we have not got any pay yet I sent a blanket home in a box with Lawrence and Daniels it is my old Blanket that I drew in Detroit I could not carry it with me so I sent it home the Express is paid it was .30 cents the blanket had S H sewed in one corner with Black thread.
