[no. 1?] - John Underhill #80 Louisville, Ky. Camp 1st Mich. Engrs June 15, 1865 Dear wife the long looked for letter arrived last night dated June 1st 1865. this is the first word from home since I was at Alexandria Va. You see by the date of this that I have preformed another journey of 800 miles by rail and river transportation. We started from Washington June 9th and got here June 14th a quick trip I am glad to hear that John is mustered out. I see all the Boys that was in Hospt are getting discharged I don't know the destiny of the Regt yet the Boys talk meeting very strong But I shall never join a meeting for the sake of my family but the volunteer army of Gen. Sherman have a just cause for meeting and they will go home whether the Gov is willing or not. I am coming home before long if we don't get discharged I shall try for a furlough. We expect to get our pay soon you need not fear about my being wiped out for the money I have to bring home with me for I shall Express my money if I am paid here 86 I am well and not in need of any money as I have a little yet and have got about $30.00 coming to me besides my pay and I dont owe more than $6.00 in the Company so I am all sound. I have been very uneasy about home for the past four weeks it seems as if I should hear bad news Perhaps my faith in the promise of God to watch over my family at home while I was away is less than it was one year ago but I could not help the feeling perhaps it was because I did not hear from home. do write as often as you can for you dont know with what joy a letter from home is received. I am very sorry your health is so poor if I had known it before I should have went home before this time and seen you I shall try hard for a furlough as soon as we are paid. I am glad the children are well and I hope God will bless you my Dear with better health in the future. Pray for me my dear wife and dont fret June 15, 1865 86 any more than you can help about me and try and take care of your own dear [js?] self is the request and pray of your much loving husband Simeon A.
