Simeon mostly discusses his feelings about his job as a cook. He prides himself in making the best of the ingredients he is given, and understands that he holds a privileged position. In order to bring some happiness to the soldiers, Simeon recalls haggling with a local merchant to get the soldiers get a fair price on hard tack for his men.
