Oct. 30, 1863 #2 Louisville Barracks Oct. 30 / 63 My Dear wife I am now in Kentucky just south of the Ohio River in Louisville. I got here this morning and expect to leave to-morrow morning. we started from Detroit Wednesday morning and got here in 36 hours by rail I sent seventy-five dollars to St. Johns by express directed. to C E P Howe we got ninety-two dollars dont write until I write again we have good quarters here in a brick Building but it is rather dirty there is about one hundred with us here I am well and hearty pay your store debts and let the rest stand and sweat awhile but keep the money all in greenbacks for that is all that is safe now. there is no more money that is worth one cent out here. I should like to see you all very much but that is impossible at this time keep up good courage and all will be well Tell Arden to be a good boy and mind his mother and it will please his father tell Helen to be a good girl and she shall be well paid I have seen a good deal of Indiana that was good and as much that is bad.
