Thomas wrote this statement in regards to his arrest in Cairo, Illinois, by the pro-Union police force. He was trying to return to Memphis after his trip to Chicago, but was stopped aboard the U.S.S. Constitution and arrested. Thomas claims he was wrongfully held without charge, he was disallowed from communicating with anyone for a period of time, and he had his personal belongings seized. It is unclear why the police were suspicious of Thomas.
